Post-PRP: What To Expect & Avoid

Congratulations on completing your Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) treatment! Taking the right steps after your session is crucial for ensuring your comfort and achieving the best possible results.

Here is a simple guide on what to expect and what to avoid as you recover.

What to Expect Immediately After Treatment

It's normal to experience a few mild and temporary sensations following your PRP session.

  • Fullness or Pressure: Your scalp might feel fuller for several hours due to the injected fluid. A mild headache from this pressure is also common. You can take Tylenol (acetaminophen) for any discomfort.

  • Mild Discomfort: You may notice slight soreness, bruising, itching, or inflammation for 24-36 hours. Your scalp could also appear pink or feel tender, similar to a light sunburn. These are all normal parts of the healing process.

  • Stay Hydrated: Continue to drink plenty of water to support your body's recovery.

  • Gentle Rinsing: You can take a warm shower the evening after your treatment. If your session was within 8 hours of bedtime, simply rinse your scalp and hair gently and pat it dry. Avoid vigorous shampooing.

Side effects are very rare, but please reach out immediately if you experience pus-like drainage, a fever, or severe pain that doesn't improve with Tylenol over 24-36 hours.

Avoid for 8 Hours / Rest of the Day

To protect your scalp and allow the PRP to settle, please avoid the following for the remainder of the day:

  • Scratching, picking, pressing, or vigorously scrubbing your scalp.

  • Direct sun exposure on your scalp. Wearing a hat is perfectly fine!

Avoid for 24-36 Hours

Give your scalp a little extra time to heal by avoiding these activities for a day or two:

  • Intense Activity: Avoid vigorous, sweaty workouts, as well as swimming, saunas, or steam rooms.

  • Certain Medications & Supplements: Do not take non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like Advil, Aleve, or Motrin. Also, avoid blood-thinning supplements such as Vitamin A, Vitamin E, Ginko, Garlic, Flax Oil, Cod Liver Oil, and Turmeric.

  • Topical Treatments: Pause the use of topical hair treatments like minoxidil, serums, or scalp exfoliants.

  • Intense Hair Care: Refrain from coloring, heat styling, or any hair treatments that involve intense tugging or pulling on the hair and scalp.

If you take prescription blood thinners like Aspirin, please be sure to consult with your physician regarding your pre- and post-treatment care. Following these instructions will help ensure a smooth recovery and set you up for successful results.
