Congratulations on completing your Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) treatment! Taking the right steps after your session is crucial for ensuring your comfort and achieving the best possible results.
Here is a simple guide on what to expect and what to avoid as you recover.
What to Expect Immediately After Treatment
It's normal to experience a few mild and temporary sensations following your PRP session.
Fullness or Pressure. Your scalp might feel fuller for several hours due to the injected fluid. A mild headache from this pressure is also common. You can take Tylenol (acetaminophen) for any discomfort.
Mild Discomfort. You may notice slight soreness or tenderness for 24-36 hours. Your scalp could also appear pink, similar to a light sunburn. These are all normal parts of the healing process. With subsequent treatments, this discomfort often becomes shorter in duration.
Serious side effects are extremely rare, but please reach out immediately if you experience pus-like drainage, a fever, or severe pain that doesn't improve with Tylenol over 24-36 hours.Avoid for 8 Hours / Rest of the Day
How To Care For Your Scalp After Treatment
Stay Hydrated. Continue to drink plenty of water to support your body's recovery.
Gentle Rinsing. You can take a warm shower and gently shampoo (if needed) the evening after your treatment. If your session was within 8 hours of bedtime, simply rinse your scalp and hair gently and pat it dry with a fresh, clean towel. Avoid vigorous scrubbing.
Avoid for First ~24 Hours
Avoid sweaty, vigorous workouts
Avoid scratching, picking, pressing, or vigorously scrubbing your scalp.
Avoid direct sun exposure on your scalp. Wearing a hat is perfectly fine!
Avoid alcohol
Avoid for First 48 Hours
Give your scalp a little extra time to heal by avoiding these activities for a day or two:
Pools & Saunas. To keep the scalp clean and free of any potential infection, avoid swimming, saunas, steam rooms, hot yoga, or other excessive sweating.
Certain Medications & Supplements: Avoid non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like Advil, Aleve, or Motrin, and avoid blood-thinning supplements.
Topical Treatments: Pause the use of topical hair treatments like minoxidil, serums, or scalp exfoliants.
Haircuts & Intense Hair Care: Refrain from coloring, bleaching, heat styling, or any hair treatments that involve intense tugging or pulling on the hair.
If you take prescription blood thinners like Aspirin, please be sure to consult with your physician regarding your pre- and post-treatment care. Following these instructions will help ensure a smooth recovery and set you up for successful results.
